Teens Earn Money

So how do teens earn money? The best jobs for teenagers and how kids earn money.

Get Rich Quick?

If you are looking for a get-rich-quick scheme, this is not it. Sure, we all want to be able to get rich quickly with very little effort, but let's face it: If it sounds to good to be true it probably is.

There are a lot of ways of helping teens earn money, but all of them require time and effort.

Education is Key

May I suggest that if a teen wants money, one of the best ideas is to do well in school and to set goals to attend some level of higher education, whether it be college, some vocational school, or whatever.

Employers want their employees to be skilled in their areas of expertise and they are willing to pay to get them. Getting an education is one of the best ways to get money. It is an investment that will keep on giving over the course of your entire life.

Minimum Wage Jobs

Minimum wage jobs may not be a lot of money for someone trying to support a family, but they can be a great way of helping teens earn money.

Remember that the federal minimum wage in 2009 was set at $7.25 an hour. Some states have an even higher minimum wage requirement. If you can land a job for $7.25 an hour, working one hour after school for 5 days a week, you would earn $36.25 every week and about $160 every month.

Teens Earn MoneyBeing younger and having little or no work experience will probably prove to be a disadvantage to teens, but many employers are hiring teens only and have only teen jobs.

This may mean that these are the less appealing jobs, but don't let this stop you. Anyone who ever got their first job was faced with the same thing. Working teenagers develop good teenage job skills, which will help in a future teen job search.

Remember that if you don't particularly love your job, it does not have to be permanent.

When I was in high school, I got a job with a local tractor and farm implement store. As my boss would give me my assigned task of steam cleaning a manure (yes that is what you think it is...cow dung) spreader, he would tell me, "This is so that you will want to go to college, get an education, and not have to do this stuff anymore." It worked!

Jobs for Teenagers

Here are some ideas of helping teens earn money that will help you in your teen job search:

  • Pick something you are interested in, find a local business that deals with that, and go ask for a job application.
  • Flip burgers at a local fast food restaurant. The work may not be glamorous, but have a good attitude, work hard and you will probably get promoted or get a raise.
  • Be a janitor. Many schools hire teens to help clean classrooms before or after school.
  • Sell stuff on eBay or another online auction. Ask your parents if you can clean out the garage or attic and if you can sell certain items that you find.
  • Work your local grocery store bagging groceries or stocking shelves.
  • Start your own website, generate traffic, and collect money from Google Adsense or other means.
  • Setup or fix computers.
  • Sell products online.
  • Networking is important at all ages. Let everyone you talk to know that you are looking for a job. Eventually someone is bound to let you know about a job opening.
  • Wash cars: offer to wash your parent's car...or for that matter the neighbors car too.
  • Mow lawns or do other yard care jobs.
  • Babysit.
  • Put a vending machine at your parent's work.
  • Work at your local library.
  • Watch for seasonal jobs...there are a lot of extra jobs around Christmas time and during the summers.

Once you start earning money, don't waste it. Put together a good teen budget, practice good teen finance, and who knows, you be on your way to becoming a millionaire.
