Compressed Natural Gas Vehicles,
Natural Gas Cars

Can compressed natural gas vehicles save you money? NGVs have distict advantages over vehicles that use gasoline.

There are a lot of ideas to save money on transportation. One that has worked really well for me is driving vehicles that run on natural gas. I estimate I have saved more than $10,000 in the last 3 years by purchasing and using NGVs.

What is Natural Gas?

Natural gas is composed mostly of methane, a flammable gas.

Natural gas occurs naturally in the environment. It can also be generated using waste from our landfills and waste from farms, namely dairy farms. In many parts of the world it is actually a waste product and is just vented into the air or burned to get it out of the way.

When used as auto fuel, the "carbon footprint" is much smaller than the traditional petroleum based fuels. Using natural gas vehicles is "green".

Why use NGVs?

There are a lot of government incentives in place to get people to use natural gas vehicles. This includes federal tax credits to convert and tax credits to buy new OEM NGVs. Different states also have certain incentives in place. Utah, for example will give you a tax credit worth 30% of the purchase price of a used vehicle not to exceed $2,500 on a converted vehicle and not to exceed $3,000 on an OEM CNG installed vehicle.

Natural gas is also typically priced much less expensive than gasoline. In the last 3 years in the state of Utah, natural gas has been anywhere from $0.63 to $1.10 per gallon of gas equivalent. That is probably the cheapest in the nation, so make sure you know what price it is where you live prior to buying your own NGV.
